Mirroring the Movement of Nature
Qi (pronounced chi) is often translated as "life force energy". It is that vital force that makes life exciting, fun, creative, and joyful. The more energy we have, the better we feel. Energy is the invisible, immaterial substance that propogates life and animates our bodies. It's in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the emotions we feel. Energy permeates all of nature.
Qi means "energy" as well as "breath". Gong is a general term meaning "work" or "skill". Qigong may be translated as "breathing exercise" as well as "energy work". Becoming an expert at working with our internal energy gives us the resources to create the optimal environment for the body's innate healing potential.
Qigong practice combines 6 methods of working with energy: cultivating which strengthens the quantity of chi, circulating chi through the meridians, clearing old energy by purging, exchanging energy by intermingling with nature, transforming energy of emotions, and storing the energy through meditation.
My lifelong passion for teaching movement evolves from my early years as a professional dancer after receiving my BA in Dance from Butler University. My innate desire to help others move with freedom, gain self-awareness and to access inner peace is the catalyst for over 25 years of teaching experience.
I have pioneered dance, yoga and qigong classes in recreational facilities, health clubs, private studios and wellness centers in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, successfully creating programs where none previously existed.
I currently teach qigong, yoga and meditation in both groups and privately. I have received my certification to teach qigong from Lee Holden at the Santa Cruz Chi Center. I am a lifelong yogi and certified to teach Yin Yoga. My meditation teachers include Sharon Salzburg, Rick Hanson and Elesa Commerse.
Qigong nurtures through meditative breathing, gentle stretches and focused attention. By rooting the mind into the body, it becomes clear, stable and calm. Learning to move with freedom helps calm the nervous system and releases habitual holding patterns of tension.
Working one on one, April designs each session with your unique circumstances and needs in mind. Working with the energy of thoughts, emotions and physical sensations you will learn to integrate and bring harmony within oneself. By focusing inward, you will become familiar with your life force energy also called "chi". Qigong techniques help you feel your chi and teach you how to direct it and focus it for the purpose of self-healing and inspiration.
In addition to working with internal energy, April will teach you how to tap into external energy. There is an infinite amount of energy always available to you from the Earth, Nature and the Universe. Learn how to become receptive and absorb, contain and harness this energy.
Relaxation is the first step to opening the flow of life force energy and allowing it to move freely and smoothly within oneself. Learning simple breathing techniques will help you balance the nervous system thus awakening the body's natural healing potential.
A session typically includes the following: breathing exercises, joint mobility movements, stretches, flows and meditation.

April, I wanted you to know that your online qi gong classes have been very powerful for me. The energy in my hands, arms and whole body is amazing during and following your classes! I have the same result with your recorded sessions. As long as I can keep interruptions from happening, I really benefit from regular qi gong. I had an interesting experience earlier this week. I took your taped class on Sunday, then immediately did my PT strengthening exercises for my arthritic hip (I have never done these sessions back to back). The PT exercises were so much easier and more pleasant — they have always been a chore I feel I HAVE to do, and I never looked forward to them. But this time, following qi gong, I WANTED to do the hip exercises as a gift to my body. A very interesting mental calmness and acceptance surrounded me, which has never really occurred before. I am a retired PT and KNOW I must do these PT exercises for the rest of my life, and they do help my hip, BUT my mental attitude needed improvement. Qigong did that!! I am thrilled and surprised.
